Substance Use and Family Recovery

Many children in DCF (and throughout the country’s child welfare system) are affected by their parents’ substance abuse or dependence. The Family Recovery Project aims to help DCF staff at all levels - workers, supervisors, managers, etc. - better understand the screening, engagement, assessment, and treatment process for parents struggling with substance abuse. We work closely with DCF staff within the timeframe of ASFA (the Adoption & Safe Families Act) to help ensure child safety while supporting the parents’ recovery process - all within a trauma-informed, culturally-sensitive framework.
